Network Rail and its main contractor Alun Griffiths alongside the steel contractor Carver Engineering, are now two years in to the £30M restoration project. The project to restore the bridge involves the replacement of timber and metallic elements which Network Rail expects will safeguard the structure for up to 60 years.
Work began in 2020 and was split into phases across three years to minimise the impact on rail services, economy, and local community. The first two phases consisted of replacing and repairing decaying timber whilst the final phase involves replacing and restoring the structural metallic elements. The viaduct will be closed for 12 weeks for the works on the main metal arch sections to be carried out, with the track renewal taking place thereafter.
The quick installation of TCB’s has been integral for this project to ensure only limited delays and impact on the rail services. Furthermore, the Greenkote® corrosion protective system is critical in ensuring the long-term performance of the structure and protection in the highly corrosive, marine coastal environment.
